Speaker 3: Did you know that most door close buttons
5
:in US elevators don't actually work?
6
:That's a true story.
7
:For regulatory reasons, doors
need to be open for a minimum
8
:time to allow people to get in.
9
:To comply, many buttons have been
disabled or use a timer that makes them
10
:basically useless because when the timer
expires, the doors will close anyway.
11
:Psychologists call this placebo buttons.
12
:And the funny thing about placebo
buttons is that people still press them.
13
:Why?
14
:Perhaps because it feels good.
15
:It feels like you are doing something.
16
:You are in control,
17
:even when nothing really happens.
18
:And isn't that exactly how
some organizations work?
19
:They have all these buttons to
press that have zero effect.
20
:The meetings, the reviews, the reports,
21
:all of which give you the
illusion of progress, but too
22
:often have no actual effect.
23
:But what's really interesting
is what happens next?
24
:People start having opinions about it.
25
:They develop tools to press
the button more effectively.
26
:They create templates and
procedures to increase efficiency.
27
:They even hold workshops
about button-pressing.
28
:They write guidelines.
29
:And still, the door doesn't move an inch.
30
:But you are already in the trap because
the better you get at pressing a
31
:non-functioning button, the harder it
becomes to admit that it was, well,
32
:never functioning in the first place.
33
:Actual progress only starts when
someone dares to ask, “what if this
34
:button doesn't do anything at all?
35
:Maybe we shouldn't get
better at pressing it.”
36
:That moment of clarity can feel
uncomfortable, but it is also the
37
:only way to stop wasting energy on
placebo progress and start lighting
38
:a path that actually opens doors.
39
:Keep lighting the path.
